Pantjiya McKenzie Nungurrayi

Pantjiya McKenzie Nungurrayi (Born c.1936) is active/lives in Australia.  Pantjiya Nungurrayi is known for Aboriginal art.

Pantjiya, was born around 1936, in the desert, near Haasts Bluff. His half-brother is Shorty Lungkata, one of the important artists in the creation of the Abori-gene artistic movement. She remembers her nomadic life and receiving food from white people who crossed the desert by camel.

She married George Tjangala and in the 1960s, the family moved to Papunya, where the pictorial movement began in 1971. Her husband undoubtedly painted some paintings from the early 1970s (doubts come the fact that names sometimes change, that some individuals have several names…). He continued to paint until his death in 1989.

During the last months of his life, Pantjiya probably assisted him in pointillist work. Women did not have the opportunity to paint until 1994 in a joint project between the artists of Haasts Bluff, where women have access to painting, and those of the Western Desert.
